Weiss Memorial Hospital, Chicago; Jacob Shoham, M.D., Ph.D., Bar Ilan University, Israel.

Objectives:  The objective of this study is to determine whether preliminary data exist which would indicate increased survival times or prolonged periods of stabilized disease for patients with advanced cancers who undertake the regimen used at the Block Center. Studies on colon, ovarian and lung cancer are ongoing. Reductions in adverse side effects of treatment, tumor response, and outcomes of physical care interventions will also be monitored.

Title: Systematic reviews of antioxidant effects during chemotherapy

Co-Investigators:  Keith I. Block, M.D.; Amanda Koch, Ph.D, Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care and University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy; Mark N. Mead, M.S., Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care; Robert Newman,, Ph.D., M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; Charlotte Gyllenhaal, Ph.D., Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and Education and University of Illinois at Chicago.

  1. Efficacy of Adjuvant Antioxidants and Cancer Chemotherapy: A Systematic Review of the Evidence from Randomized Controlled Trials.  Manuscript in preparation.
  2. Effects of Adjuvant Antioxidants on Cancer Chemotherapy Side Effects.  Research in progress.

These studies use standard literature search techniques to objectively capture all randomized clinical trials in which antioxidants were given concurrently with chemotherapy.  The first study examined whether there was any impact on survival and tumor response, while the second will examine whether antioxidants reduce chemotherapy side effects.

Completed

Title: Body Composition and Cancer

Co-Investigators:  Keith I. Block, M.D., and Charlotte Gyllenhaal, Ph.D., University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy and Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care.

Objectives: This literature review assessed the scientific background supporting the use of body composition analysis to track nutritional status in cancer patients, and the validity of different methods for such analyses.

Completed

Title:  "Use of Dietary Supplements by Cancer Patients Participating in a Complementary Diet and Lifestyle Cancer Treatment Program".

Co-Investigators:  Keith I. Block, M.D.; and Charlotte Gyllenhaal, Ph.D., College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate cancer patients attending a complementary oncology clinic (Block Medical Center) as to nutritional supplements and substances they self-prescribe or which have been prescribed for them by outside practitioners. Patients were interviewed to determine what supplements they were taking unrelated to Block protocols, where they acquire information about them, and what they feel these agents add to their cancer treatment.

Completed

Title:  "Investigation of dual antihormonal therapy in prostate cancer treatment."

Co-Investigators: In collaboration with Laval University Medical Center, Quebec, Canada, co-investigators included:  Keith I. Block, M.D., Block Medical Center and the University of Illinois; Fernand LaBrie, O.C., M.D., Ph.D., Laval University Medical Center; and others.

Objectives:  Participated as a clinical site in  investigations using dual antihormonal therapy (Flutamide) in prostate cancer treatment (FDA-approved); led to the licensing of this drug, Eulexin in 1987.
