The Block Center: Penny B. Block, M.A., Ph.D., Executive Director

Block Center co-founder Penny B. Block has become nationally known for her research and publications on complementary care in oncology, including nutrition, psychological support and stress response strategies, therapeutic exercise and physical care.  She provides individual and group patient counseling and education in addition to professional training.

A graduate of Cornell University and Northwestern University, she earned her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago with a clinical emphasis on behavioral medicine and psychological oncology.  Beyond her academic and clinical training, she has had advanced training in techniques to diminish trauma and anxiety; clinical hypnosis in cancer management; mind-body medicine focusing on the physiology of stress and relaxation.

Her articles on integrative care for cancer patients have been published in peer-reviewed journals, and she is the author of Eating Well, a dietary guidebook for healthy, delicious cuisine.  In addition to directing the Block Center educational and integrative clinical teams, she is an active member of the center’s research team, as well as an assistant editor for the Sage Science Press journal “Integrative Cancer Therapies."
