Physical Therapy It's crucial that our patients feel as strong as possible as they begin to experience physical challenges, which may be caused by disease or may be the result of cancer treatments, such as surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. Our goal is to improve treatment outcomes and maintain quality of life through recovery. Through physical therapy programming, any strength or function that may have been compromised as a result of a cancer diagnosis or treatment are addressed. In individual and small group sessions our team discusses and demonstrates sensitive strategies to help you improve aerobic function, gain flexibility, increase strength and stamina, achieve structural integrity, decrease pain, and encourage deeper relaxation. Our physical therapy programs include rehabilitation, cardiovascular and strength training, Asian fitness systems such as Chi Gong and Yoga, and therapeutic body treatments (Massage Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Orthobionomy). We work with you to build an individualized program that is realistic and adapted to your needs and capabilities, one that can be enjoyable and effective. We design a personal regimen that is not only tailored to your lifestyle, but can be implemented easily in your home or health club. Individual Physical Therapy Program Design One of our physicians will order a P.T. consult for each patient. The initial consult will include a patient interview, range of motion testing, manual muscle and functional strength testing, and questions about pain and fatigue. It may also include a walking treadmill test and/or body composition analysis (which measures lean mass and fat percentages according to height weight frame and sex). After the initial evaluation is completed, the patient and P.T. (physical therapist) will develop goals for patients to work towards and a customized program will be developed. Your customized program may include specific therapeutic exercises, Yoga, Block be Fit Bio-conditioning Exercises, Massage Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, or Orthobionomy. Therapeutic Yoga Classes Individuals are taught mastery of deep relaxation, through a series of gentle stretches, strengthening poses and focus on deep breathing techniques. Patients gain strength, flexibility, poise, and a sense of centeredness. Classes are available for individual and small groups (3-4 participants). The Block be Fit Bio-Conditioning Exercise Program Keith and Penny Block together have developed the Block Bio-conditioning Program (Block Be Fit) drawing from both Eastern and Western philosophies on exercise, medicine, and health and healing. The Block Be Fit program is a series of gentle but very focused stretching, and movement routines coordinated with breathing. With regular practice, patients are able to increase their cellular oxygenation, increase their general stamina, strengthen their muscles and bones, as well as strengthen and nourish their organs. The effects of the exercises also include increased blood and lymphatic circulation, which benefits the cardiovascular and the immune systems. Our staff works with group and individual formats to adjust and tailor the exercises for each patient. All of the exercises can be performed while receiving chemotherapy or vitamin infusions. Exercises can be modified for individuals who need to remain seated. Therapeutic Body Treatments Massage Therapy While massage therapy has proven scientific applications and effects, such as decreased pain and inflammation, decreased swelling and lymphedema, improved circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids, decreased Cortisol levels and deeper rest which boosts immune function, it should also be mentioned that the application of therapeutic body treatments is a skillful art. Its benefits are not only derived from the scientific application of techniques, but also the sensitivity of the therapist and the unique healing relationship that develops between therapist and patient. After consultation with the Physical Therapist, one or more of the therapeutic body treatments may be recommended. Massage Therapy Massage Therapy decreases pain, inflammation and swelling, increases general circulation, increases range of motion, elicits a relaxation effect and boosts immune function.
